Stunning shots capture the moment a whale is in the bay Monterey, California put on a demonstration for boats full of whale watchers, greeting them with a spectacular sweep of the tail.
74-year-old photographer Jody Frediani from Santa Cruz was able to witness the incredible behavior of a four-year-old female humpback Murphy's whale as two of them passed a whaling guard ship Monterey Bay Sea Wolf II.
Frediani, a whale researcher, said: "One of the whales made a powerful lunge with his head not far from our boat. the same whale continued to emerge, wag and wag his tail for the next 90 minutes."
Frediani explained: "The length of adults ranges from 14-17 meters and can weigh up to 40 tons. It seemed that this young whale just amused by raising his tail and jumping out of the water."
