How in ancient times ice was made in the heat of +50°C (4 photos)

It's +50 °C outside, and on the table is a refreshing hakshir with irio seeds and ice cubes. But where does the ice come from in the desert?





It turns out that the ancient Persians knew how to make ice. For this they used yakhchals - refrigerator buildings. "Yah" means ice, and "chal" means pit.



Yakhchal consists of two parts. The ground part is itself a cone with two-meter walls. The walls were coated with sarudj - material based on sand, clay, egg whites, lime, goat wool and ash. This material held the temperature well.

The lower part of the yakhchal is an ice storage. On the sides of the cone, “bagdirs” are also placed - air flow accelerators.

Below, under the yakhchal, a rope flows - this is what they call aqueduct with water. Hot air, getting into the yachchal, is accelerated by the bagdir, and as a result, the air temperature in the yakhchal drops to 0 °C degrees.

I don't know how exactly to describe the process in terms of physics, taking place in the yakhchal, but the fact remains - on the walls of the vault ice appeared. It was scraped off, pressed and left there for storage. The process was repeated regularly, as a result, whole blocks of ice. And it's in the desert!

But the most interesting thing is that the ancient Persians did not need electricity to get ice!

The story with the yachchal once again convinces me that ancient people were no more stupid than modern ones.
