When we think of wild cats, we immediately imagine leopards and tigers, or other large predators. But among wild cats there is one a baby that is even smaller than domestic cats. Is it rusty or spotted red cat.
Spotted red (rusty) cats are one of the smallest felines in the wild. They are close relatives of Bengal cats, and have a similar spotted color. Length their body reaches 40 cm, and their weight is 1.4 kg. For comparison, the average the body length of an ordinary domestic cat is about 45 cm, and the average weight is 4-5 kg.
These beauties live in southern Asia: in India and Sri Lanka, and also in the Bardiya National Park in Nepal. They have a varied environment habitats - they can be found in both dry and wet forests, bamboo thickets, meadows and rocky hills. Despite the small size, rusty cats are ferocious hunters. They prey on rodents, small birds, lizards, insects. They are good at climbing trees - including to look for prey from above, but spend most of their time on the ground.
Alas, rusty cats are endangered. The International Union for Conservation of Nature has designated them "Vulnerable". This mainly due to loss of habitat and increased population in India and Sri Lanka. In the wild, it is estimated that only about 10 thousand adults of these feline representatives.
