Peacefully pretending to be a log, the “ghost bird” opened its mouth and scared the woman
A large nightjar, also called the “ghost bird,” was basking in the sun pretending to be a piece of wood on the fence of a farm near the Colombian town of Cibolo until it was approached...
The Colombian drew attention to the strange piece of wood from the fence at the moment when a fragment of the fence opened its eyes and stared attentively at her. Recovering from confusion, the woman took out her phone and began filming what was happening.
The piece of wood turned out to be a bird that settled on the fence and sat almost motionless. When the woman, emboldened, came closer, the bird perked up and, apparently having changed its mind about becoming a social media star, opened its huge mouth to say so. The author of the video was surprised and jumped back.
Journalists from the publication that published this story explained that the Colombian woman was frightened by a gigantic nightjar. This bird species is active at night and feeds on large insects and small vertebrates. At dusk and in darkness, gigantic nightjars fill the surrounding area with sounds similar to growls or groans.

The habitat of these birds is in the forests of South America. Due to the ability of nightjars to become invisible, as well as the chilling screams they make at night, they have been dubbed ghost birds.
In a number of localities, a legend has been preserved that hearing the cry of this scarecrow close to you is not the best omen.
