A feathered master of camouflage
A wildlife enthusiast captured a bird trying to blend in with its surroundings in Brazil a few years ago. It chose a wooden fence post.
The footage captured in Brazil shows an adult giant nightjar standing on a wooden fence post, perfectly blending in with its surroundings.
But by getting too close, the cameraman was careless and scared the bird, which jumped off the post and immediately hurried to get as far away from the man as possible, even leaving the egg it was hatching to its fate.
The second part of the video shows the bird standing in exactly the same way, but with its hatched offspring, which is trying to exactly repeat the pose of the parent.
Giant nightjars are a nocturnal bird species that use the unusual color of their plumage to hide from predators. Usually, when at rest, they lean on broken tree branches or wooden fence posts.
