Japanese method of multiplying numbers

14 December 2017

The East, as we know, is a delicate matter. The inhabitants of those distant lands eat with chopsticks, write with some squiggles, and perform incomprehensible ceremonies for any reason. However, few people know that the Japanese count in a completely different way than we do! For example, the multiplication table is something we cannot do without, a cornerstone in the study of mathematics. But in Japan, children initially do without it when calculating, deftly multiplying two- and even three-digit numbers. The strip method, the main topic of this video, helps them with this.

All you have to do is draw a small table where each digit will be displayed by the required number of lines, and count their intersections. However, it is better to see for yourself!
