School No. 78 in Kyiv (8 photos)

21 March 2016

It was founded back in 1938 and was then located on Engels Street (now Lutheranskaya), 25 its first director was Vera Iosifovna Gatti, the daughter of an Italian and a Russian. During the October Revolution, Vera Iosifovna completed nursing courses and took an active part in the civil war (in the ranks of the Red Army). After the war, she entered Kiev University, graduated from graduate school in 1926, and taught history. With the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, she voluntarily goes to the front, works in a hospital, is captured, from which she escapes and returns to occupied Kyiv. Actively involved in the underground struggle in the partisan detachment named after. Popudrenko. She died in battle on June 30, 1943. It was from the threshold of her native school that on June 23, 1941, a detachment of volunteers - students from school No. 78 - went to the front. Many students died in those terrible years. In 1944, the school received the status of a women's school, and Anna Vasilievna Sementsova was appointed as the new director.

In the post-war years, the school lives a new peaceful life. Students and teachers are actively involved in the restoration of the capital, and it was not without their help that Khreshchatyk was raised from the ruins. In 1961, a friendly team helped prepare for the opening of the Khreshchatyk metro station. School life was rich and interesting: literary evenings are held with the participation of famous prose writers and poets - V. Sosyura, O. Vishny; Olympic champions in artistic gymnastics - Larisa Latynina, Boris Shakhlin, Vladimir Titov - come to visit the students.

Soon the old school premises became cramped, and it was decided to build a new modern building with a swimming pool and a large gym. A.V. made a lot of efforts to make this move possible. Sementsova, the then director of the school.

In 1963, a new school building was opened at 4 Baseinaya, at that time this building had no analogues in Kyiv and the USSR. Large hall with a fountain, comfortable classrooms. High school students developed self-government, equipped a school radio station with their own hands, introduced oral journals, and organized meetings with scientists and masters of art.

One of the traditions started by Yu.V. Parkhomenko, - assistance to internationalist soldiers. Students in grades 7-8 enthusiastically worked at the district military hospital at 15 facilities - in the surgical and emergency departments, pharmacy, blood transfusion station, canteen, etc.

Due to the reconstruction of the Bessarabia quarter, the school is changing its address again. The old building was also quite interesting, with large columns around the perimeter, beautifully painted walls and a fountain in the center. But the school was already in a state of disrepair, and when part of the glass roof collapsed, almost killing the cleaning lady, the decision to move the school was made as soon as possible. The new building was built on a large scale and quickly, but not very conscientiously and efficiently - in the first years, accidents occurred: a pipe would burst and flood the lower floor, then cracks would appear in the walls, or the glass roof structure could collapse under the weight of snow and it was necessary to constantly clean it . The new original premises are located on the street. Shota Rustaveli, 47. It opened its doors on September 1, 2000. Distinguished guests of honor congratulated the students and teachers: President of Ukraine Leonid Danilovich Kuchma, Mayor of Kyiv Alexander Omelchenko, Chairman of the Presidential Administration Vladimir Lytvyn.

In 2008, to mark the 70th anniversary of the school, the School History Museum was opened.

There are many famous personalities among the graduates of school No. 78, but its most famous student is perhaps film actor Leonid Kanevsky.
