There are many legends about the deleted scenes from Vladimir Menshov’s Oscar-winning film “Moscow Doesn’t Believe in Tears.” I decided, based on the memories of the director and actors of the film, to collect all the information into a single whole. According to Alexey Batalov, the film was greatly cut during editing - it became an hour shorter. First of all, this affected “explicit scenes”.

Here is a fragment of the transcript of the artistic council meeting, at which the already assembled film was discussed. The speaker was the then director of the film studio Nikolai Sizov:

“Some moments in the film simply amazed me. For example, the love scene with Tabakov. If you were shown it in its original form, as it was at the beginning, you would be horrified! It’s simply obscene! The same applies to the scene of the heroine’s seduction in the professor’s apartment in first episode.

Menshov should grow into a good master. But from the point of view of artistic taste, he just needs to be helped to detach himself from certain thoughts that lead the picture astray."

So what was there in the love scene with Tabakov? If you believe the words of Menshov and Tabakov, there was nothing terrible in this scene. But as those “at the top” thought, the actors “overacted greatly” and “undressed too hastily,” remaining in only their underwear.

They also shortened the scene of Katerina’s seduction, from which only a weak “no” or “don’t” remained (I don’t remember exactly)

According to Vera Alentova, they greatly shortened the beginning of the second episode, where her heroine takes a shower and her daughter gets dressed while dancing.

Also, according to Batalov, the conversation between Gosha and Nikolai in the communal apartment was greatly reduced. Remember? When Nikolai finds Gosha at home, very drunk.

Batalov's hero sat in a cloak over his naked body. And when he got up for a new bottle, it was noticeable... (Batalov had a hard time then - the scene was filmed in winter, in a house without heating, being prepared for demolition, and Alexey Vladimirovich had a bad cold)

By the way, about this scene. Another point has been shortened here.

"What happens in the world?" - Gosha asks, pouring. “There is no stability,” Nikolai answers him. “Terrorists again hijacked an Air France plane.” So, in order to avoid international problems, they decided to cut down Air France. And if, according to the script, Gosha and Kolya sing “A young Cossack is walking along the Don” , in the film they are just cutting up bream.

“There was a lot of really funny stuff in the film, but once again there was a fight against drunkenness, and a lot of good lines fell out,” says Alexey Batalov. (Here Alexey Vladimirovich, in my opinion, is confusing something with drunkenness they began to fight under Gorbachev in 1985, and the film was shot in 1979-80.)

Some scenes with hockey player Gurin, played by Alexander Fatyushin, were also cut out. Fatyushin admitted that he really fell in love with his hero, and was very sorry that much was not included in the final version of the picture. Like, for example, the scene at the Luzhniki Sports Palace: the Soviet team played a match with the Swedes, and Gurin became the hero of this meeting.

Fatyushin was much more sorry for the last cut scene. If you remember, towards the end of the film, everyone gathered at the dacha, Gurin “gave up” and moved on to coaching... The three heroines are sitting on the heap, singing. And then Gurin was supposed to appear: his tie was on one side, his shirt was turned inside out, and there was some kind of moron with him. Gurin argued with Muravyova over a triple, and the khanyga shouted at her: “How are you talking to him? This is Gurin, I grew up as a person at his matches!” But the leaders of the then Goskino said about this scene: “No, I’m done, that means I’m done. A national team player, even a former one, cannot let himself down like that.”

There were also changes in the film during filming and revision of the script. Menshov increased it from 60 pages to 90. New storylines, new characters emerged, for example, the story of the drunken hockey player Gurin or the scene in the dating club. According to the script, the main character, a Moscow City Council deputy, was hosting a reception of voters. "Boring!" - Menshov decided and sent her to a dating club, where the headmistress, played by Liya Akhedzhakova, matched Ekaterina with “a head office employee - a very responsible one - only fifty-three years old.”

Instead of a French film festival, as in the film, girlfriends Ekaterina and Lyudmila had to watch as those invited to... a diplomatic reception arrived at the Argentine embassy. However, they decided to replace the Bolivian ambassador and the US naval attaché with 1950s movie stars Yumatov and Konyukhova, and the Fords and Buicks with domestic ZISes and Pobeda cars. A scene appeared with Smoktunovsky, who “starts a little late” in his acting career.

According to the script, Rudik had not only an activist mother - the director of the kindergarten, but also a father - Rachkov Sr., a turner by profession.

And when Rudik invited Katerina to the television center on Shabolovka, he had to film KVN, and she had to watch the concert from the front row. They did not assemble a huge hall, deciding to replace KVN with the filming of “The Blue Light” - the calling card of Soviet television of those years.

Menshov deliberately made some scenes more everyday. Batalov's hero Gosha, instead of sitting in front of the TV watching a hockey match and sipping beer, took on repairing a vacuum cleaner.

When the film was released, critics unanimously called it a cheap melodrama that exploited the base feelings of the audience. The viewer was completely delighted with the film.
