American Man Sues Wife After Tripping Over Her Slippers (3 photos)

They say lovers' quarrels are harmless fun, and a recent case out of Cleveland, Ohio, seems to prove the point. A local man suffered severe injuries due to his girlfriend’s carelessness and demanded $80,000 in compensation—only for the couple to get married while the lawsuit was still making its way through court.

In February 2018, John Walworth decided to tidy up his home and carry a box containing four one-liter jugs of vinegar from the kitchen down to the basement. Unfortunately, his live-in partner Judy Khoury’s slippers were lying right near the top of the stairs. Tripping over them, Walworth took a violent tumble down the staircase, shattering the glass jugs and breaking both arms and a leg.

The fractures were severe enough to require surgery. His insurance failed to cover the treatment, leaving Mr. Walworth with nearly $80,000 in medical bills. In October 2019, after making a full recovery, John decided that since his sweetheart’s scattered footwear caused the accident, she should foot the bill for his treatment.

He filed a lawsuit in an Ohio state court seeking to recover the full cost of his medical expenses from his partner. In the filing, Walworth dramatically detailed his fall and subsequent "excruciating suffering," describing the incident as "tragic and severe." Following a legal battle that dragged on for two years, the court ultimately dismissed his claim.

The court ruled that Judy’s slippers were in plain sight, meaning Walworth could have easily stepped over them had he been paying attention. The verdict may have also been influenced by a surprising twist in the couple's personal lives: while the legal wheels were slowly turning, Mr. Walworth and Ms. Khoury actually tied the knot. It was a bizarre turn of events for two people engaged in an active lawsuit against each other.

While the exact ages of the couple involved in this tragicomedy were not disclosed, local Cleveland news outlets noted that both are older adults. In fact, Judy Khoury had retired a couple of years before Walworth's basement blunder. The two had been dating for several years and were engaged at the time. Reportedly, losing the lawsuit did not dampen John's spirits, and he has no intention of splitting up with his now-wife.

Suing over misplaced slippers is certainly unusual, but the world of litigation has seen even stranger disputes. In India, for instance, a husband took his wife to court after discovering she wasn't... entirely a woman.
