On November 1, 2024, an emperor penguin was found on Ocean Beach in Western Australia—the first of its species recorded in the country. These penguins usually live in Antarctica. The bird was malnourished; he was named Gus.
Gus was taken in for rehabilitation by local wildlife carers Carol and Graeme Biddulph. During his care, he gained 3.5 kilograms and regained his strength.
On November 20, 2024, the penguin was transported on a conservation service vessel and released into the Southern Ocean. DBCA.
