Thieves Stole NVIDIA Rigs Hunting for Scarce GPUs, But Got a Brutal Surprise (3 Photos)

Sometimes karma doesn't just hit hard—it hits hilariously hard. In Fremont, California, a gang of ambitious thieves decided to pull off the heist of the century. They had clearly done their homework, tracking down and stealing massive NVIDIA-branded semi-trucks right from a warehouse.

For those unfamiliar with the tech world, graphics cards from this brand are currently worth their weight in gold thanks to the AI boom. Snatching an entire truck loaded with these GPUs is like hitting the lottery jackpot and securing a lavish retirement on a tropical island. The thieves were already counting their millions as they cracked open the trailer locks—only to find 20 tons of plain construction sand instead of shiny new microchips.

It turns out NVIDIA and autonomous driving firm PlusAI were using the trucks to test self-driving technology. To help the AI driver learn how to properly brake and corner under real-world road conditions, the trucks needed to be weighted down to simulate a fully loaded haul. Naturally, nobody was going to load millions of dollars in delicate electronics into test vehicles, so tons of sand were dumped inside as ballast.

And these were brand-new rigs, packed with insanely expensive autonomous driving sensors, LiDARs, and cameras—plus tons of sand...

The crime of the century was foiled thanks to sheer luck and a fatal slip-up by the thieves.

A vice president at PlusAI was peacefully sipping his coffee when a friend texted him: "Hey, congrats on expanding! I just saw two of your branded trucks parked right outside my office!" The executive nearly choked on his coffee—the rigs were supposed to be parked in a secure, gated lot.

By the time the cops arrived, the thieves were long gone. As it turned out, when the crew cracked open the trailers and realized that instead of high-tech silicon for microchips they had landed silicon dioxide (a.k.a. plain old sand), they suffered a complete system crash. Frustrated and panicked, the criminals abandoned the big rigs right in the middle of the street and fled, without even trying to strip the ultra-expensive tech inside the cabs.

It was a classic case of artificial intelligence outsmarting human intelligence—without even turning on the CPU.
