It turns out that hedgehogs are good swimmers and can swim across small bodies of water, even though they don't particularly like doing so. Their bodies are quite buoyant, and their quills absorb almost no water, so they do not weigh the animal down when wet. While swimming, a hedgehog instinctively keeps its snout above water and actively paddles with all four paws.
