Cortland said he heard his daughters' screams from the street and, rushing out of the house, saw the cause. A bear was rummaging through the trash cans. Animals usually flee at the sight of people, but this one headed toward the homeowner. That's when Cortland realized he'd been wise to buy and keep bear spray in the garage. Rushing to get the can, he sprayed it at the bear and confirmed it worked—the uninvited guest had fled. True, some spray got into Cortland's eyes, but things could have been worse.
The man added that the bear's strange and potentially aggressive behavior came as a complete surprise to him. Bears in the area tend to avoid human encounters.
