Blue Marble: An Accidental Masterpiece That Became a Mirror of the Planet (5 photos)

The "Blue Marble" photograph, taken on December 7, 1972, by the Apollo 17 crew, has become the most recognizable symbol of Earth, though its creation was largely a matter of luck. The astronauts, en route to the Moon, were approximately 45,000 kilometers from home when the Sun was perfectly positioned behind them, completely illuminating the Earth. This shot became the first photograph in history to capture the planet completely bathed in light.

Interestingly, the authorship of this photograph remains unclear: NASA attributes it to the entire crew, although geologist Harrison Schmitt is considered the most likely photographer. The view of Earth that everyone knows today actually passed through the editorial process of specialists. The original planet was oriented with Antarctica facing up, and only in preparation for publication was it flipped to its familiar "north-up" orientation, adding color saturation for a more striking print.

This photograph became a powerful cultural phenomenon, effectively becoming a visual hymn to ecology. In an era when the world was divided by the Cold War, the image of a fragile, isolated "blue marble" with no visible boundaries reminded humanity of its shared responsibility for a home from which no one else had taken a full-scale photograph of such magnitude for many decades.
