Night hunting in a retro spirit: How they fished in Hawaii in the middle of the last century (2 photos)
This photo, taken in 1948, transports us to a completely different era, when night fishing off the coast of Hawaii resembled more a scene from a science fiction film than a typical fishing venture. Before us is a man equipped with the latest technology of the time: a back-mounted light, essentially a torch, directing a bright beam of light directly onto the water to lure prey in the darkness. With his homemade "spotlight" slung over his shoulder, this fisherman seems to be a true master of the coastal waters, for whom darkness is no obstacle, but merely a backdrop for his fire-based hunts. Historical images like these remind us how resourceful people were, using only basic tools, open fire, and ingenuity to accomplish a task that today would require complex electronic systems. In the end, there is a certain primordial aesthetic to it: man, fire and the endless night ocean, merging into one atmospheric picture of the past.
