Violent deaths of celebrities always cause a sensation. And if a celebrity dies under strange circumstances, theories emerge that excite the public for years. In the 1930s, Thelma Todd was a shining light on the Hollywood scene. She was at the height of her success when fate unexpectedly cut her life short. To this day, no one knows who is behind this tragic incident. Todd's death is considered one of the most mysterious in the history of the Dream Factory.

Who is Thelma Todd?

Thelma Alice Todd was born on July 29, 1906, in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Thelma grew up an active, goal-oriented child and excelled academically. After graduating from high school in 1923, she enrolled in college, where she trained as a school teacher. During her student years, Thelma not only participated in beauty pageants but also regularly attended film studio auditions. She even attended acting school to improve her chances of success.

Everything in her life changed after she won the title of Miss Massachusetts. Hollywood scouts tracked Thelma down and offered her admission to the Paramount School for Junior Stars, a prestigious academy for young actors. Afterward, the young teacher training college student immediately abandoned her career as a teacher and focused entirely on her path to the film industry.

"A Hollywood Fairytale"

Thelma Todd played her first roles in silent short films. But as her popularity grew, the offers became more and more interesting and highly paid. In her short career, which lasted less than ten years, she appeared in more than 120 films. Among them were the cult comedies "Monkey Business" and "Horse Feathers" with the Marx Brothers. Thanks to her striking charisma, the actress earned the affectionate nicknames "Creamy Blonde" and "Hot Todd" in Hollywood.

The actress's restaurant in Malibu

Besides film, Thelma opened a luxurious restaurant in Malibu, Thelma Todd's Sidewalk Cafe, which was often frequented by the West Coast's most famous people. The young actress had it all: recognition, wealth, and crowds of admirers. Her life seemed like a true "Hollywood fairy tale," but it all ended in terrible tragedy.

Death by Car

On the morning of December 16, 1935, a maid found Thelma dead in her car, parked in a garage near a restaurant. The actress was sitting in the driver's seat, dressed in an evening gown. Upon examination, police found traces of blood near Todd's nose and determined the cause of death to be exhaust fumes. At first glance, it could have been an accident: perhaps Thelma started the car to warm up and fell asleep, unaware of the danger. Alternatively, it could have been suicide—a common method for motorists to take their own lives.

However, questions soon arose. Investigators learned that over the past couple of weeks, Todd had been receiving disturbing letters that were greatly upsetting her. Someone had been calling her frequently, and she preferred to talk on the phone alone, avoiding witnesses. It was later discovered that the actress had been pressured by extortionists. They demanded a then-immense sum—$10,000—and threatened to kill her. The Los Angeles Times even reported on the story.

The evening before her death, Thelma spent time at a party at the Trocadero restaurant. According to friends, she was in a great mood. Even an argument with her ex-husband, Pat DiCicco, didn't spoil her evening. What could have driven a successful actress, full of plans for the future, to suicide? And how can we explain the strange fact that peas and beans, which weren't on the Trocadero menu, were found in her stomach?

Suicide, accident, or murder?

Thelma's death was officially ruled a suicide, but this theory has raised doubts. The actress's mother, Alice Todd, insisted that her daughter loved life and actively prepared for Christmas, buying nearly a hundred gifts. Furthermore, journalists from the Los Angeles Times reported that the autopsy revealed signs of violence: a broken nose, bruises on the throat, and two broken ribs. However, these injuries are missing from the medical records, adding to the mystery.

Investigators proposed an alternative: Thelma could have accidentally been poisoned by exhaust fumes while trying to warm up in the car. But this theory also failed to explain the injuries. Rumors of murder soon began circulating in the press, and suspicion fell on several figures in the actress's life.

Suspicious Connections

One of the prime suspects was the actress's business partner and lover, Roland West. He was a well-known Hollywood film director and also helped Thelma in her restaurant business. Some claimed that West locked Thelma in the house after an argument, and she fled to her car, where she died. Historian Mark Wanamaker, citing producer Hal Roach, a friend of Thelma's, held West indirectly responsible for her death.

Roland West

West and Todd lived together for a time in an apartment above the actress's restaurant, but the seriousness of their relationship remained a mystery. The situation was further complicated by the fact that their neighbor in the apartment building was Jewel Carmen, West's ex-wife and co-owner of the restaurant. This bizarre relationship added further tension to the story.

All her acquaintances unanimously insisted that Carmen wasn't at all worried about her ex-husband's new relationship. However, she was extremely serious about her business. When the restaurant began to lose money because of Todd, Jewel frequently quarreled with the actress and even threatened her.

Possible Mafia Involvement

Later, police uncovered another remarkable fact about the actress. It turned out that Roland West wasn't her only lover. Thelma also had a relationship with a mobster named Charles Lucky Luciano.

Mafioso Charles Lucky Luciano

Investigators learned from Thelma Todd's friends that Luciano not only assaulted her but also introduced her to drugs. The gangster had his own plans for the restaurant—he planned to open a casino there. During one conversation about his plans, witnesses heard the actress say, "Over my dead body." To which Luciano calmly replied, "That can be arranged."

Suspects Among the Family

Police also believed that Todd's ex-husband, Pat DiCicco, had another motive for revenge. Thelma was the one who initiated the divorce, and Pat felt insulted. He repeatedly stated in various companies that he would not forgive her and would definitely take revenge. The last suspect turned out to be the actress's mother, who would become the sole heir to her fortune and property.

It turned out that the cheerful and carefree actress, whose smile was always on her face, had many detractors. However, the investigation never found any clear evidence of murder. The court ultimately ruled Thelma Todd's death a suicide. Some investigators and almost all of her friends refused to accept this decision. They insisted on continuing the investigation, convinced that the truth remained hidden.

A Very Strange Suicide

There were indeed many inconsistencies in Todd's case. The police report stated that Thelma, drunk, went to the garage. There, she started the car and turned on the heater, then sat in the front passenger seat and fell asleep. Death was caused by exhaust fumes. Similar cases do occur all over the world, and thousands of motorists fall victim to such tragic accidents every year. However, there are too many details in this story that raise doubts.

A blood test showed the actress had only a small amount of alcohol, and she was clearly aware of her actions. Either Thelma had intentionally committed suicide, or her death was the work of a cunning killer. Further confusion was created by journalists, who were not allowed into the garage along with the police. The reporters began spreading rumors that they had glimpsed traces of a murder, which later disappeared. Investigators spent 60 minutes at the scene of Todd's death, having locked the garage from the inside. They could easily have destroyed any evidence.

The Chicago Tribune, citing anonymous police sources, reported that Thelma Todd's body had serious injuries that police concealed:

"While the grand jury ruled that Todd committed suicide, it chose not to explain her broken nose, bruises on her throat, and two broken ribs. Apparently, jurors decided that Todd also beat herself to death."

But despite the general discontent, the case was not reopened. The official version of the young Hollywood star's death remains suicide. Thelma Todd's mysterious death continues to excite enthusiasts, who conduct one independent investigation after another and put forward the most unusual hypotheses about her death.

A mystery still unsolved

Thelma Todd's story still raises many questions and haunts mystery lovers. Who was behind her death—the mafia, a jealous lover, an ex-husband, or was it a tragic coincidence? Do you think the actress's death was truly a suicide, or have we been deprived of the truth? Share your thoughts in the comments!
