Lovers in Japan - demand a receipt from cheaters (6 photos)

Japan has an unusual law: if there's infidelity in a marriage, the lover with whom the infidelity occurred can also be fined for interfering in the family's life. Because there's nothing wrong with that, waste your time on singles, and don't waste your time on married ones!

In Japan, the lover pays the fine for infidelity!

But recently, a Japanese court decided to complicate this rule (for some reason) by adding conditions.

How much does it cost to have a married lover?

The "third party," as lovers and mistresses are called in these cases, usually received the full penalty in court. If the marriage survived the affair, the lover would pay between 500,000 and 1 million yen. If the affair led to divorce, the amount soars to 3 million yen.

However, three conditions must be met to recover compensation:

The affair must be proven.

You knew your partner was married.

The affair caused real damage to the marriage.

Japan is a country of private detectives, didn't you expect that?

By the way! That's why detective agencies specifically for finding lovers are quite popular in Japan. Because photographs are needed to attach to the case file in order to receive maximum compensation.

What changes have they decided to make to the love triangle?

They decided to give lovers a loophole to avoid fines if the broken marriage was already heading toward divorce.

The problem is that in Japan, it's not customary to show emotion in public; they don't kiss, so they have to take photos out the window of a love hotel...

The problem was that the courts rarely accepted this argument from hapless lovers without ironclad evidence. Simply saying "we're getting a divorce, honestly" wasn't enough, so it was a very weak loophole.

How one case changed the entire practice

A high-profile case recently occurred. A man over 50 sued his wife's lover. He managed the restaurant where she worked. The lawsuit was for 3.3 million yen, and her lover was fined, though not as much.

It's not your wife crying, but your mistress, who's in for a million yen because of you!

However, the couple hasn't actually spoken since 2023, when they decided to divorce. Moreover, an email from her husband has been preserved, in which he wrote that they shouldn't interfere in each other's personal lives. In other words, he wanted to find a new woman before all the formalities, and wrote to his current wife as much. And then, when she found a new man, he immediately backed out (or for the money).

Offended by his husband's duplicity, the lover appealed and was found not guilty because he was convinced his new wife was getting a divorce. He had done nothing immoral.

You could create a family business and have lovers so they could pay fines.

And so, on June 5, 2026, the Supreme Court acquitted him of the charges, stating, "If the unfaithful partner has reasonable grounds to believe that the marriage has already broken down, he bears no fault in the divorce."

Now get a divorce paper.

To avoid a fine, mistresses in Japan now only need a divorce paper from their cheating husband. It's not necessary to actually divorce him; a formal note dated BEFORE the start of their sinful affair is required. Therefore, it's best to send it by email.

The wife of a very cheating husband says: "DEAR, WE ARE RICH."

By the way, a Japanese woman recently sued a man for wasting his time. He didn't tell her he was married, and instead of looking for someone to marry her and have a child with, she wasted it on someone already married. And the court sided with her.
