In Brazil, a 37-year-old woman pretended to be a 14-year-old girl to avoid working and live with a foster family. For 14 months, she posed as a girl named Gabriela and convinced a family to take her in. She lied about suffering from serious illnesses, making herself appear older than her age.
To maintain her guise, she imitated a childish voice, threw tantrums, fed from bottles, and faked panic attacks. She also begged not to send her to school, claiming her abusive father would find her there.
The family became suspicious and contacted the police. It turned out they were dealing with an adult con artist who had previously carried out similar schemes in other parts of Brazil.
