Ferrari's First Electric Car Becomes the Hero of Memes and the Object of Criticism (32 photos)
At the end of May 2026, Ferrari unveiled the Italian brand's first electric car. It's logical to assume the company would have loved to hear fans' enthusiastic praise for the Luce's bold design and the designers at LoveFrom, as well as see its managers' accounts flooded with messages from people eager to reserve their battery-powered Ferraris before anyone else. But the public has its own opinion on the new model.
Within a few days, jokes about the Luce escalated from local to global, with not only fellow Ferrari drivers joining in, but also completely random brands like chocolate maker Toblerone, for example. The car was compared to the Nissan Leaf, to which the Japanese company responded that imitation is the best form of praise. People online were even able to estimate how new owners would have to charge the supercar, given the past achievements of the office equipment design team.
However, the attacks on Ferrari weren't limited to memes. The brand's approach to its first electric car didn't particularly please the former head of the company. Luca Cordero di Montezemolo noted that his real thoughts about the Luce wouldn't benefit the brand. Moreover, he sees the risk of destroying the brand's legend and hopes that Ferrari will remove the logo from the car.
Current Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann also took a dig at Ferrari for its path to electrification. Amid all the criticism of the Luce, he stated that Lamborghini's decision to cancel the battery-powered Lanzador project was the right one. The top manager didn't openly criticize his colleagues, but he did mention that while innovation is necessary, it can't be forced on customers.
The presentation also had an impact on the company's financial situation. Ferrari shares immediately fell 5.1% on the New York Stock Exchange and 8.4% on the Milan Stock Exchange. Naturally, this also sparked a lot of commentary about the automaker's imminent demise, but looking at the bigger picture, one can see that the brand's shares have been gradually declining for several months.
