Scientists Record a Shark in Antarctic Waters for the First Time

Australian scientists have recorded the presence of a large shark in the icy waters of Antarctica for the first time. The large predator was captured on camera at a depth of approximately 490 meters off the South Shetland Islands.

The 3-4 meter long predator was captured on camera at a depth of approximately 490 meters off the South Shetland Islands. The water temperature there is just a degree above freezing.

"We didn't expect to see sharks—they weren't thought to live in Antarctica. And this isn't even a small shark. This is a huge shark. A real tank," said researcher Alan Jamieson.
