A watch shaped like a car for the price of a supercar (6 photos)
Louis Vuitton, in collaboration with jewelers and watchmakers, has released a series of desk timepieces shaped like antique trucks.
The full name of this mechanical trinket, designed to decorate a desk and tell the owner the exact time, is Louis Vuitton Camionnette Edition Limitee. It is said to be a tribute to the fashion house's historic fleet of delivery vehicles.
While the design of the toy car is not tied to a specific model, it most closely resembles the features of the Citroën B10 delivery vans of the 1920s. Adorned with the brand's advertising, they delivered Louis Vuitton leather suitcases to customers across France.
This rather hefty 7-kilogram mechanical watch was developed by La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton in collaboration with the Swiss watchmaker L'Epée 1839. The gilded case and wheels are set with 1,695 diamonds totaling 41.44 carats, including the largest—the LV Monogram—crowning the radiator. Even the taillights are not simple crystal, but red and orange sapphires.
Under the hood, two rotating cylinders display the time in hours and minutes. In the cockpit, a ticking balance wheel provides direct access to the Calibre MV.7417/101 movement, which provides an eight-day power reserve.
To maintain the watch's running time, the owner must manually wind it with a gilded steel key. It's stored in the trunk, inside a trunk made from the same materials as full-size suitcases a century ago: authentic Monogram canvas, wood, and brass.
The Louis Vuitton Camionnette Edition Limitee is limited to 15 pieces, priced at €650,000 each. For comparison, the 1,050-horsepower flagship hybrid Ferrari 849 Testarossa is priced at €460,000.
