The restyled Mercedes-Benz S-Class, codenamed W223, has celebrated its world premiere. The car features new bumpers with a larger radiator grille, literally adorned with the brand's signature three-pointed star. A similar design can be seen in the headlights and taillights. As a bonus, in certain markets, the car will also feature an illuminated brand badge on the hood edge.
The model's new headlights not only look striking but are also packed with technological solutions. Each contains 25,000 micro-LED modules, and the high-beam headlights have a range of up to 600 meters, automatically adjusting the beam to avoid blinding oncoming and passing vehicles. As a bonus, the headlights can project patterns onto the road, warning the driver of changes in road surface, for example, or a narrowing of the road.
Inside, the S-Class has been brought into line with other new models from the brand, with the Hyperscreen dashboard adapted for the flagship sedan. However, while in the EQS, for example, all three dashboard screens were housed under a single pane of glass, in the S-Class, the 12.3-inch instrument panel has been moved to a separate tablet, overlooking a massive projection screen. The infotainment system's touchscreen measures 14.4 inches, while the passenger display is 12.3 inches. The S-Class also has selfie cameras for video conferencing.
Also noteworthy is the redesigned center console, which now features two wireless charging ports, illuminated cupholders, and adaptive air vents that automatically adjust the airflow.
The S-Class's fascination with neural networks hasn't bypassed the company, so the latest version of the MBUX operating system is equipped with a virtual assistant based on ChatGPT4o.
The model's equipment list is, naturally, extensive. Buyers will have access to various heating, heating, and ventilation options, including heated seat belts, optional 13.3-inch displays for rear passengers, a 39-speaker audio system, separate rear seats with ottomans, over 150 color options, 400 interior trim variations, an updated suite of driver assistance systems, and much more.
Under the hood of the S-Class, you'll find both 6- and 8-cylinder engines. The latter, incidentally, is new, codenamed M177 Evo and featuring a flat-plane crankshaft. With a displacement of 4.0 liters, it produces 537 hp and 750 Nm and is a mild hybrid with a 48-volt starter-generator. The V8 sedan will be codenamed S580.
A similar numerical designation, but with the "e" prefix, will be used for a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) based on a 3-liter inline-six engine. The total output of the powertrain will be 585 hp and 750 Nm, with an electric range of 103 km. A simpler, 435 hp PHEV variant called the S450e will also be available.
The base models will be the S450 and S500 variants, each with a 3.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine producing 381 and 449 horsepower, respectively. European customers will be able to order the sedan with a 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine producing 313 or 367 horsepower. Full-fledged AMG variants and the luxurious Mercedes-Maybach will be added to the lineup in the future.
After the facelift, all S-Class models will be equipped with all-wheel steering. However, in the more basic models, the rear wheels will only be able to turn 4.5 degrees, while a full 10-degree steering range is available at an additional cost.
One of the major chassis updates is the iDamping system, which combines adaptive suspension with cloud-based technologies. According to the plan, all new S-Class models will collect data on road imperfections and upload it to dedicated servers. This data will then be available to other vehicles, allowing them to pre-set the suspension for maximum comfort.
European prices for the updated S-Class start at €121,356 for the Mercedes-Benz S 350 d 4MATIC.
