A Giant Danish Boot That Became a Symbol of Friendship (14 photos + 1 video)
In the summer of 2017, more than 35,000 Scouts gathered in the Danish city of Sønderborg for an international rally. The event's motto, "We Leave Traces," was literally embodied in an unusual monument.
It was a giant hiking boot with its own name, Stivlen, which literally means "Boot."
This bizarre architectural structure is 24 meters long. The toe of this gigantic boot serves as a covered picnic area with a barbecue. Its shaft houses a restroom and a staircase leading to an observation deck at a height of 12 meters.
This unique steel-frame structure with wood sheathing under reeds was born from the collaboration of several companies and the work of Scout volunteers. The volunteers included engineers, carpenters, and electricians who worked from dawn to dusk for months on end. Their collective endeavor embodied the spirit of the Scout movement, which poured its heart and soul into the project.
Unlike most temporary structures at such gatherings, the giant boot was chosen for permanent preservation. It now stands in Sønderborg as a literal, impressive footprint, making a huge impression on all visitors to the city.
