A giant Japanese tank that creates storms on command
Japan boasts a unique research facility considered one of the most advanced in the world for studying the marine environment. It's a gigantic deep-sea tank, impressive in scale: 16 meters wide and up to 35 meters deep.
It's designed to model and study ocean waves. At the heart of this high-tech facility are 128 powerful wave generators located around the perimeter of the tank. Using these, researchers can precisely create and control waves of virtually any complexity—from ripples to storm surges—simulating open ocean conditions. This facility allows engineers and scientists to test offshore structures such as platforms, wave power plants, and port infrastructure in a safe and controlled environment.
