Peugeot unveiled the steering wheel of the future (8 photos)
Automotive designers often imagine radical solutions. The Peugeot Polygon concept is just such a case in point. The French company unveiled the unusual Hypersquare steering controller for future vehicles.
The Hypersquare is a thick rectangular controller with finger holes, more like a gaming pad. It integrates control of most vehicle functions and completely eliminates any mechanical connection to the wheels, transforming the driver's experience.
The system uses two 12-volt electric motors and a variable gear ratio. At low speeds, the steering wheel makes parking quick and easy, and at high speeds, minimal steering movements provide precise control, although transitional moments, such as braking on corners, may be unusual for the driver.
Peugeot CEO Alain Faveille believes such innovations shape the future of driving, but also acknowledges the risks. If Hypersquare doesn't become popular, its implementation will be too expensive.
