In 1955, while drilling at the Haripur gas field in Sylhet, engineers encountered an area of abnormally high gas pressure, causing the well to explode, destroying the drilling rig and rupturing the earth. The powerful explosion created a deep crater that later filled with water, and natural gas continues to slowly leak from the surrounding area.
