This American climber was free-soloing—without a rope, safety harness, or any protection. Clouds had already enveloped the tower yesterday, and light rain was falling, so the planned ascent had to be postponed until today. The moisture and fog made the task even more extreme and dangerous.
Taipei 101 was the tallest building in the world from 2004 to 2010, until it was surpassed by the Burj Khalifa. In 2004, Frenchman Alain Robert had already climbed the tower—with a safety harness and in four hours. Honnold, famous for his solo ascents of large mountain walls, repeated the feat with speed and without a safety harness.
