An impeccable violet suit, lush hair with a life of its own, and a wild, kind gaze—all of this is the image of Willy Wonka, forever etched in the memories of generations of viewers.

Actor Gene Wilder, whose face always beamed with joy, became not only a cinematic icon but also the hero of one of the most popular memes of all time. However, the artist's life hid stories far more surprising than the character he played.

1. Real Name

It's hard to imagine, but the man the world knows as Gene Wilder was actually born Jerome Silberman. He came up with his stage name at the age of twenty-six, inspired by the name Eugene from the works of Thomas Wolfe and the work of playwright Thornton Wilder.

2. The First Spectator

Gene's interest in acting was sparked at the age of eight, sparked by his mother's illness. A doctor, diagnosing his mother with rheumatic fever, advised the boy to "try to make her laugh." Later, after seeing his sister perform on stage, Gene fell completely in love with the theater and begged her teacher to take him on as a student as soon as he turned thirteen.

3. Military School

Gene's mother, seeing his potential, sent her son to the prestigious Black Fox Military Academy in Hollywood. However, this step turned into a nightmare: the future actor, being the only Jewish boy at the school, faced brutal bullying and soon returned home.

4. Stage Debut

Returning to Wisconsin, fifteen-year-old Wilder landed his first role. He played Balthazar, Romeo's servant, in a production of Shakespeare's tragedy. Performing in front of an audience gave him a thrill that never left him.

5. Fencing Skills

While attending drama school in the UK, Gene became fascinated with fencing. After just six months of intensive training, he won the school championship, becoming the first rookie to achieve such a feat. This skill later came in handy in Hollywood for staging scenes involving weapons.

6. Military Service

In 1956, Wilder was drafted into the US Army. After training in the Army Medical Corps, he chose to serve at a military hospital in Pennsylvania, which allowed him to simultaneously study acting in New York City.

7. The Lee Strasberg Method

While studying at the renowned New York studio, Wilder, on the advice of a colleague, became fascinated with Lee Strasberg's method. Soon, he not only enrolled in the legendary teacher's class but was also accepted into the renowned Actors Studio.

8. The Condition for Wonka

Having landed the role of Willy Wonka, Wilder agreed to it only on one condition. He insisted on adding the scene of the first meeting with the character, which he himself devised. This is why we see Wonka hobbling with a cane, suddenly somersaulting and standing to applause. This moment was not in the original script.

9. Rejection of the Remake

Gene Wilder never saw Tim Burton's 2005 adaptation and was critical of the film. He believed the remake was made solely for money, and was disappointed with the portrayal of Johnny Depp. Wilder openly stated that he found this interpretation of the story offensive.

10. Personal Life and Legacy

Wilder was married four times. His marriage to Gilda Radner was especially significant. After her death from cancer, the actor dedicated much of his life to raising awareness of the disease, founding the Gilda Radner Research Center in Los Angeles and supporting the work of the Gilda Radner Foundation.

11. Retirement from Film

Since the 1990s, Wilder has largely retired from acting, focusing on literary work. He attributed this to a lack of worthy scripts and fatigue with violence and special effects in modern cinema.

"I get sent fifty-two scripts a year, and maybe three of them are good," he said. "That's why I took up writing."
