This New Year's Eve was the last straw for the authorities. On the night of January 1st, the ancient neo-Gothic Vondelkerk church in Amsterdam burned down. The building is beyond repair.
Riots and attacks on police and firefighters were reported across the country. Around 250 people were arrested for arson and illegal use of fireworks. Several people died across the country on New Year's Eve. The situation was similar in Germany: more than 400 people were arrested in Berlin on New Year's Eve for riots and attacks on police. Traditionally, the streets of the German capital turn into a branch of hell on New Year's Eve. In France, 813 cars burned on New Year's Eve.
