In Poland, an excavator operator unearthed artillery shells from World War II. Sappers quickly arrived on the scene, and the construction site was cordoned off.
Excavation work in Jasionka, near Rzeszów, was suspended pending an investigation. Experts determined that the items found were unexploded shells from World War II.
750 artillery shells were recovered that day, but the search was called off due to bad weather and darkness. The next day, work resumed and another 1,314 rounds of ammunition were found, bringing the total to 2,064.
Sappers from the 21st Battalion of the Polish Army defused the bombs.
A spokesman for Rzeszow Police Headquarters reported: "750 artillery shells have been found. Due to weather and darkness, work has been suspended until tomorrow. Officers guarded the site all night. If you find an unexploded shell, call the police immediately. Do not touch or move it. It is also important to cordon off the area until emergency services arrive and prevent other unaware individuals from exposing themselves to danger." ![]()
