In 1968, TNF released its first catalog, just two years after the company was founded by Douglas Tompkins in San Francisco. The catalog appeared shortly after the opening of the company's North Beach store and was a key step in the brand's development as a manufacturer of professional mountaineering gear focused on trekking and hiking, rather than photoshoots or entertainment.
The catalog showcased TNF's initial product range: down sleeping bags, hard-frame backpacks, expedition tents, and other functional products designed to protect against the cold, wind, and rigors of mountainous terrain, especially for those without much experience.
The catalog's design was minimalist, without unnecessary embellishment—all attention was paid to practicality. At the time, outdoor culture in the United States was just emerging, but The North Face was already setting high standards and defining its own rules.
