In 1731, the Bey of Algiers presented the Swedish King Frederick I with a live lion, marking one of the first times lions were introduced to Scandinavia. This lion was kept in a cage near the museum. After its death, it was decided to stuff it, but neither the invited taxidermist nor the museum staff had any idea what a real lion should look like. The resulting image resembled a heraldic lion more than a real one. After photographs of this stuffed lion appeared online, the image of the Gripsholm Lion became a popular internet meme.
