7 examples of unexpected family connections in Hollywood that you might not know about (14 photos)

The Six Degrees of Separation Theory states that any two people on the planet are connected by a chain of no more than six mutual acquaintances.

In Hollywood, it's simpler: one wedding is enough to connect two stars, or even make several celebrities related.

1. Millie Bobby Brown and Jon Bon Jovi: Daughter-in-law and Father-in-law

A month before Millie Bobby Brown and Jake Bon Jovi's low-key wedding in Italy (May 2024), the groom's father, musician Jon Bon Jovi, shared his impressions of his now-daughter-in-law:

I've gotten to know her over the past year; she works very hard. She and Jake are on their own path. Their story is a fast-forwarded version of what happened to me 40 years ago. I think with their family's support, they'll succeed.

The couple married in their early 20s. The Stranger Things star later explained that they looked up to their parents, who also married young:

His parents married very young; they've been a couple since high school. Mine did too. They met at 19. We had wonderful role models in front of us, so it was natural for us. We weren't intimidated by any other opinions.

In August 2025, Millie Bobby Brown and Jake Bon Jovi adopted a baby girl. In a recent interview, the actress revealed that she has changed her last name, so she is now Millie Bonnie Bongiovi.

2. Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence: Now Family

After starring together in Boomerang (1992) and Life (1999), Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence hardly expected to become related. But everything changed when Murphy's son, Eric, proposed to Lawrence's daughter, Jasmine, in November 2024.

Eddie, who has many children, joked that he's paid for the last six weddings, so now it's up to Lawrence. Martin agreed. But five months later, it emerged the couple had chosen a quiet church ceremony.

3. Chris Pratt and Arnold Schwarzenegger: From Fan to Son-in-Law

Chris Pratt married Katherine Schwarzenegger, the daughter of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver, on June 8, 2019, and those family ties still seem like a special bond to him. Unreal:

Being his son-in-law and part of his family, having his support, means so much to me. I grew up admiring his films, this big action hero. I dreamed of being like Commando or the soldier from Predator, I adored Terminator. So to receive praise from him for bringing me to the big screen is truly mind-blowing.

Pratt is not only Iron Arnie's son-in-law, but also related to Katherine's siblings, including actor Patrick Schwarzenegger. They starred together in the series "Dead List," and Patrick gained fame for his role as Saxon in Season 3 of "White Lotus."

4. Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, John Krasinski: A Big Happy Family

After working together on The Devil Wears Prada (2006), Stanley Tucci was invited to Emily Blunt and John Krasinski's wedding in 2010. There he met Emily's sister, Felicity, whom he married in 2012.

Emily Blunt is generous with her praise for her relative:

He's a universal Renaissance man who knows the way to everyone's heart. And that way is by having a great time. He's frighteningly smart, laughs easily, loves being laughed at, is charismatic, warm, and energetic. He's genuine and irreverent in the best possible way. He simply understands life, and I adore him madly.

By the way, this means that Tucci and John Krasinski, Emily Blunt's husband, are also now related.

5. Josh Brolin and Barbra Streisand: The Harsh Care of a Stepmother

Barbra Streisand is married to James Brolin, making her Josh Brolin's stepmother and a doting grandmother to his four children.

In an interview with The Times, Josh recalled a moment early in his sobriety journey when, at Streisand's house, he asked her for a glass of wine. Her response was, "But aren't you an alcoholic?"

Commenting on this conversation, Josh said:

That's why I value her so much. We argued for years because she was so straightforward and probably reminded me of a healthier version of my mother. She was the typical Jewish mother who would say, "You can't do that because it will hurt you." I appreciate that level of honesty, regardless of my reaction. And that caring was always present in her manner—a language that took me a while to understand and that I now fully embrace.

6. Peter Sarsgaard and Jake Gyllenhaal: From Co-Workers to Family

Peter Sarsgaard married Maggie Gyllenhaal in 2009, but they had been dating for four years before he first starred alongside her brother, Jake Gyllenhaal, in Jarhead (2005).

Nearly two decades later, they reunited in the Apple TV+ thriller series "Presumed Innocent." Both believe their real-life relationship added depth to their on-screen relationship.

Jake Gyllenhaal:

We both agree it helps. If you have a history with someone and you come into a scene that's a fictional world, you can bring all that baggage. I love working with Peter. He demands honesty not only as a brother, but also as an actor. You just know you're working with someone who's willing to do anything, and it's pure joy.

They'll soon be reunited in Maggie Gyllenhaal's new film "Bachelorette!", which she will direct.
