In Japan, you can still buy a new, spacious Toyota for $12,000 (14 photos)
This isn't a kei car or any other microcar, but a fully-fledged Probox station wagon, which has been in production for over 20 years.
Launched back in 2002, the Toyota Probox only underwent a scheduled modernization 12 years later, retaining its original body structure and layout. Successfully occupying a market niche, the 4.2-meter five-door looks more like a conventional minivan than a classic station wagon converted from a sedan.
Based on the chassis of the similarly aged Corolla Axio, the Probox is powered by a 1.5-liter inline-four gasoline engine producing 107 hp, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). A hybrid version with the same engine and even 4WD is available. The front suspension is a MacPherson strut, while the rear is a four-link spring system. All other configurations were discontinued over time as demand waned.
The 2026 model year version received a larger 4.2-inch instrument cluster, partially integrating the functions of the missing multimedia screen, as well as the multi-function steering wheel from the new Corolla. Luxury features include an auto-dimming rearview mirror and an outside camera.
The Toyota Safety Sense suite of safety systems, mandatory by law, includes, among others, Proactive Driving Assist, which assists the driver with steering and braking, and Park Assist.
The main advantage of the low-maintenance Toyota Probox is its price, which ranges from 1,918,400 to 2,261,600 yen, making it one of the most affordable not only in its segment but also on the Japanese primary market overall.
