A massive collapse at a mine in Congo
More than 30 people were killed in a collapse at a copper mine in Lualaba Province in the southeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Dozens are still missing.
At least 32 miners were killed when a bridge at the mine collapsed. A landslide was the cause.
On November 15, a bridge built by miners collapsed. The governor of Lualaba warned of a possible death toll. According to the miners' association, 49 people were killed and dozens are missing.
Authorities report that the bridge collapsed due to heavy rains and was poorly reinforced. Horrific footage of the incident is circulating online.
According to one theory, the collapse was triggered not only by the landslide but also by a conflict between security guards and miners. Guards opened fire to disperse the crowd, but instead caused panic and damaged the bridge.
