This is a track cycling discipline in which a cyclist on a special bicycle without brakes or gears races just 30 centimeters behind a frame mounted on a leading motorcycle. The pacemaker creates a powerful aerodynamic field, allowing the cyclist to conserve energy and maintain incredibly high speeds—up to 80 km/h on a 250-meter oval track.
Distances range from 30 to 100 km, and the pacemaker changes approximately every ten laps to reduce the risk of overheating from the hot engine. Participants must maintain perfect distance, time their finishing push precisely, and maintain maximum concentration: the slightest error can result in a loss of momentum or a dangerous fall.
