Now, when addressing an athlete, you must refer to him as "sir." Sir David Beckham—and nothing else.
On November 4, a ceremony took place in the UK: King Charles III officially knighted legendary footballer David Beckham.
The athlete was awarded the title for outstanding achievements in sport, numerous achievements on the football pitch, and significant contributions to charity. Beckham retired from playing in 2013, representing leading clubs in Europe and the United States. He won league titles in England, Spain, and France, won the Champions League, and played 115 matches for the national team, where he captained them for six years. Beckham is currently a co-owner of American club Inter Miami, where Lionel Messi plays.
At the ceremony held at Windsor Castle, Beckham expressed his pride and considered the monarchy an important part of British identity.
"I'm incredibly proud of this. People know what a patriot I am—I love my country. I've always said how important the monarchy is to my family. I've been fortunate to travel the world, and all people want to talk to me about is our monarchy. I'm proud of it," the former footballer said.
The footballer's wife was among the guests at the ceremony. From now on, the 50-year-old athlete can be known as Sir David, and his wife Victoria has been given the title Lady Beckham.
Along with Beckham, renowned writer and Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishigure was also knighted.
