Nissan continues to implement its cost-cutting plan, which includes laying off 20,000 employees, closing several plants, reducing the number of platforms, and cutting production volumes. The latest casualty of the new management is its second production site in Mexico, the Cooperation Manufacturing Plant Aguascalientes (COMPAS).

This plant was launched in 2017 as a joint venture with Mercedes-Benz. The Japanese automaker produces the Infiniti QX50 and QX55 SUVs at the plant, while the German company produces the GLB crossover in Mexico and, until 2020, also produced the A-Class there.

According to Nissan representatives, Infiniti production will be phased out as early as November 2025, while Mercedes-Benz clarified that their model will continue to be assembled until May 2026, after which the COMPAS assembly lines will be shut down.

Nissan's rapid cost-cutting measures have already yielded results. While the company previously forecast an operating loss of approximately 100 billion yen (approximately $650 million) for the second quarter, Nissan now expects a profit of 50 billion yen.

Next March, another Nissan plant in Mexico, which became the company's first overseas plant 60 years ago, will be closed. Nissan is also abandoning its domestic production facilities; for example, one of its main factories in Japan will close in early 2028.
