A fake story spread on Polish social media claiming a farmer from Dąbrowica was giving away free potatoes because he couldn't sell them. People believed it, flocked to his field, and essentially stole 150 tons of the farmer's harvest. Some arrived with trailers and tractors.
The farmer returned the next day—and there was no harvest.
A Polish farmer lost 150 tons of potatoes due to a fake story about free vegetable distribution.
A report that a farmer from Dąbrowica in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship was allegedly giving away his harvest for free appeared on an internet portal last weekend and quickly spread across social media. Following this, people with trailers and tractors began arriving at the potato field.
Farmer Petr learned of the incident only the following day, as he had been at a family celebration over the weekend. In a statement to the media, he stated that the published information was false and asked for the voluntarily return of the stolen items.
Petr says the situation came as a shock to him and hopes for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. According to the farmer, the loss of 150 tons of harvest is a significant loss for him. He intends to meet with those who visited his field to sort out the situation and does not wish for further publicity.
"One man came and said he took two bags because he 'went crazy' when he saw the crowd. He apologized, explained, and everything was fine. But there are also those who took tens of tons," the Pole complained.
The farmer did not respond to a question about whether he planned to contact the police. The district police department has not yet received any official statements regarding the incident. ![]()
