A British man was arrested in Thailand with 9 kg of drugs; he faces the death penalty (3 photos)
On Monday, September 29, British citizen George Wilson was arrested at a Bangkok hotel. The 23-year-old tourist was found with 9.15 kilograms of methamphetamine. During questioning, he denied knowing the contents of his luggage.
Colonel Siranawitcha Inthorn, Superintendent of the Police Crime Suppression Department, stated: "George Wilson has been charged with the distribution of methamphetamine, commonly known as 'ice.' He is charged with drug trafficking, which is a serious crime that contributes to drug abuse."
Under Thai law, importing or exporting illegal substances carries the death penalty or life imprisonment. However, such sentences are rare. Judges more often impose prison terms.
Mitigating circumstances can reduce the sentence to 10-20 years.
Police believe Wilson was hired to transport drugs through Suvarnabhumi International Airport to the destination country.
The tourist said a British drug courier nicknamed Snoopy gave him a pink suitcase and paid him 20,000 baht.
"I spoke to the suspect in English," said Lieutenant Colonel Pongthanin Bamrungsuksawat, deputy head of the 5th Metropolitan Police Department's detective squad. "He admitted that the items were his. The charges and his rights were explained to him, he was handcuffed, and taken into custody for trial."
In recent years, Thailand has become a hub for drug trafficking. Authorities have declared the north of the country part of the "Golden Triangle"—a region where illegal substances are produced and distributed.
According to experts, methamphetamine is produced in neighboring Myanmar and then shipped through Thailand to international markets.
