The magical charm of Fairy Valley (17 photos + 1 video)
Hidden on the Isle of Skye, this stunning area resembles a portal to a magical dimension.
Fairy Valley is one of the island's most enchanting corners. Its rolling landscape, like something straight out of a fairytale, contrasts sharply with the surrounding pastures. Bizarre rock formations, perfectly conical hills, reflecting pools, and waterfalls scattered across the slopes are all concentrated in a tiny space, creating the impression of a miniature version of a grand geological wonder.
The Fairy Valley (Bail nan cnoc in Gaelic means "mountain village") has earned this unique miniature landscape on the Isle of Skye a reputation as a place of myth and wonder. This small, magical patch of the island, dotted with gnarled rowan trees, was formed over 100,000 years ago by landslides following the retreat of a glacier. Years of erosion and exposure to the elements have sculpted the sandstone into unusual shapes. This is how conical rocky hills, occasional boulders, tranquil lakes, and even a basalt castle emerged.
Although direct folklore doesn't link this place to magical folk, locals believe that fairies created this unusual landscape and still inhabit its numerous crevices. This is not surprising, as it is the quintessence of magic. The Isle of Skye is rich in fairy tales. However, scientists attribute the valley's origin to a giant landslide.
It's easy to lose track of time here, spending the entire morning or afternoon wandering among the velvety hills. The emerald green of the grass and the deep hues of the rocks are especially vibrant on a sunny day. Tourists leisurely climb the rounded peaks and amuse themselves by creating fairy stone circles.
However, creating stone patterns is considered an act of vandalism here. Local residents are forced to dismantle the structures every winter. It's much wiser to preserve the memory of this place simply by taking photographs. Particularly striking shots are taken from the top of Ewen Castle, a natural rock formation reminiscent of ancient ruins. And who knows, perhaps the fairies who lent their graceful hands and magic to the creation of this place will one day decide to appear in our world again.
