Big cat - small joys
At the Phoenix Zoo in Arizona, 15-year-old Sumatran tiger Joan spotted a cardboard box and began behaving like a typical feline.
A zookeeper at the Phoenix Zoo told Newsweek that part of Joan's care involves "behavioral enrichment" to provide a mentally and physically stimulating environment, prevent boredom, and maintain species-appropriate behavior.
"Most of our cats (big and small) enjoy cardboard enrichment boxes, but Joan is especially fond of them. We love to encourage natural behaviors they would imitate in the wild, but sometimes we have a hard time eliciting them. By using modern equipment but relying on their instincts, we can create engaging enrichment for both the tigers and ourselves," she explained.
