A US man has discovered over $40,000 hidden inside an old stove he was planning to take to a scrap yard. Instead of keeping the money, he gave it back to its owner, sparking a wave of discussion online.
A Reddit user named dmatson724 shared how his father found over $40,000 hidden in an old tin stove. The stacks of bills were wrapped in rubber bands and placed in rusty cans. The post quickly went viral, collecting over 116,000 upvotes and over 5,400 comments.
As the author of the post explained, his father, a retiree, simply wanted to make some extra money by selling scrap metal. When he picked up the old stove, the door opened and tin cans of money spilled out. Despite the potential to dramatically change his life, the man did not claim the find.
"He did not own the stove. The money was returned and he received a small reward," the author of the post reported.
He also stressed that his father acted according to his conscience.
"Theft was never considered. It was a strange situation, but he did what he thought was right," he noted.
Judging by the banknotes, some of which are dated 2008, the money had been in the hiding place for no more than 17 years. At the same time, the condition of the cans suggests that the "treasure" was not collected at one time.
The opinions of the commentators were divided. Some users expressed doubts about whether the money had really returned to its rightful owner. Others supported the man and praised him for his honesty.
"This would be money that would change his life. But it's not his," the author of the post added.
