Meow capital of Miraflores: how cats conquered Kennedy Park (16 photos + 1 video)

In Lima's fashionable Miraflores district, there is a cozy park where dozens of cats live.





The cats came here to drive away the rats... and stayed. At least, that's the legend of how John F. Kennedy Park in Lima's elite district turned into a kingdom of the whiskered and striped.



Cats of all colors and sizes live here - fluffy, smooth-haired, spotted and striped. No one bothers them. They lie on benches, doze in flower beds, climb trees and even sit on the laps of tourists, who happily pet them.





The cats even have their own mini-hotel, built in the park by local animal lovers. The sign at the entrance reads: "I'm your friend, Maggikooky. When you're cold, I'll warm you up."

How the cats conquered the park



Legend has it that in the 1980s, the park was overrun by rats. Since the place is very popular with tourists (there is a beautiful colonial church and outdoor cafes in the area), the problem had to be solved. Cats were brought to the park, and the rodents quickly disappeared. But the cats decided to stay.



Grateful residents and animal rights activists began to feed them, build shelters and provide veterinary care. Today, the park is affectionately called "El Parque de Los Gatos" - Cat Park. And not a single rat has been seen there for a long time.



Now it's not just a green area, but a place where cats rule - lazy, contented and absolutely confident in their exclusivity.
