Christopher Columbus's house in Genoa (11 photos)

How wonderful it would be to see the real house where Christopher Columbus grew up! Unfortunately, the building that stands today in Genoa is just a reconstruction. However, it is still ancient, and it was restored just a few decades after the original was destroyed.

Christopher Columbus is an amazing person. He was born in Genoa in 1451. His father was a weaver and also ran a tavern, where young Cristoforo worked as an assistant. Little is known about the navigator's childhood, but historical documents confirm that he lived in this house from 1455 to 1470, after which the family moved to Savona, a city west of Genoa.

The house was originally two or three stories high: there was a shop on the ground floor, and the front door was to the left of it. Most likely, the building was destroyed during the bombardment of Genoa by the troops of the French King Louis XIV in 1684. At the beginning of the 18th century, it was rebuilt on the old foundation, but two floors were added. Curiously, the superstructure was erected on beams that rested on neighboring houses. When these buildings were demolished around 1900 to make way for a street, the upper floors had to be removed and the house became a two-story building again.

In 1887, the building was bought by the City of Genoa and restored, turning it into a tourist attraction. On the façade hangs a marble slab with the inscription:

There is no house more worthy of attention than this one, within whose walls Christopher Columbus spent his youth.

The Casa di Cristoforo Colombo stands outside the 14th-century fortress walls and, of course, attracts many tourists. Today, it houses a museum dedicated to the man who united the Old and New Worlds – albeit at great cost.
