Austin's daily life and the most recent sunset in Texas (13 photos + 1 video)
In the heart of Austin, on the Congress Avenue Bridge, a fantastic natural show is played out every evening.
From March to November, at dusk, a giant black wave rises from under the spans. These are 1.5 million bulldog bats flying out to hunt, becoming real winged artists for the audience.
This is the largest urban bat colony in North America. In August, when the dry heat sets in, the spectacle is especially impressive: the mice fly out in continuous streams, turning the sunset into a living Gothic performance. In one evening, the colony eats up to 10 tons of insects. Mice are the city's natural anti-mosquito squad.
Tourists gather not only on the bridge, where you can feel the concrete shaking under your feet from a million wingbeats, but also on the embankment of the northern bank of the river. From here, you can see the best view of a live tornado. The bravest rent kayaks to find themselves right under the flying cloud.
These mice were almost exterminated in the 1980s, until biologists proved that they were not dangerous, but useful. Now they are protected, and every evening the bridge turns into the most mystical and beautiful attraction in Texas.
