A Stuck Cat Survived for Three Weeks on a "Diet" of Beer and Insects (3 pics)
An 11-year-old cat named Leah crawled under the floorboards of a neighbour's house and was stuck there for almost a month. The cat managed to survive thanks to a can of French beer.
Ben Smith, 83, from Kent, said his pet Exotic Shorthair cat Leah had disappeared. The family searched for her, put up posters and even paid a pet detective £1,000 to help find the cat.
But it turned out that 11-year-old Leah had snuck into a neighbour's house where renovations were being carried out and climbed under the floorboards without anyone noticing. It was only 23 days later that neighbours heard the cat meowing under the floorboards, made a hole and found her next to an open can of French beer.
Mr Smith's daughter Kelly Cooper said: "A half-empty can of beer was found and we wondered if she had had a few sips from it."
"She could also have been eating small mammals like mice or insects, and quite possibly drinking condensation from the pipes. We will never know how she survived all this time. But when she was rescued, she had lost a third of her body weight," the woman said.
Leia was immediately taken to the vet and was found to be doing relatively well, but was severely dehydrated.
In an even stranger twist, Leia, named after a Star Wars character, was coincidentally found on the annual Star Wars celebration day of May 4.
"I am euphoric, I am so glad she is back. Leia has been my only companion in the house since my wife passed away. Her sudden disappearance was devastating," the cat owner said.
