Elon Musk's city appeared in the USA (4 photos)
Boca Chica, a town in southern Texas, was originally the home of SpaceX, but the town's residents decided to keep their noses in the game and went full-tilt.
The town's residents voted almost unanimously to turn 1.45 square miles around the launch pad into a new municipality called Starbase. The thing is, almost the entire population works for SpaceX. So it would be a sin not to respect the boss.
"The city will help us continue to build the best possible community for the men and women who are building humanity's future in space," Starbase wrote in a separate post.
So what's in it for Elon himself? The thing is, while state and federal laws will still be in place, SpaceX will have much more planning freedom. That means city councils will be able to approve zoning, construction, and infrastructure, setting the pace for the Starship factory.
So now the residents of the corporate space city with cybertrucks have an ugly bronze head of Musk on the beach, a street called Memes Street, and a launch pad for the SpaceX rocket program.
Critics fear that the creation of the city will expand Musk's personal control over the territory, which could lead to the closure of a popular beach and state park. But who will listen to them.
