A pensioner in the UK has been running her own shelter for over 50 years (3 photos + 1 video)

During this time, she has saved ten thousand animals.





Keel's story began in the 1970s, when a British soldier who was going to serve in Northern Ireland asked her to look after his dog. That episode determined the future fate of the woman, who realized that she was very attached to animals.



Kiel now runs her own 12-acre animal sanctuary. She ran it on her own for about 20 years, but now she has a team of volunteers who make it a cozy haven for hundreds of abandoned, rescued, or abused animals from farms and shelters. “I used to have about 40 cats, and I started taking in farm animals like sheep, cows, pigs, and goats to help them,” she said.

The woman also runs a small store as part of the Barby Kill Sanctuary, where owners can buy food at a low price. “We also run a shop on site and I buy food in bulk with my pension money and sell it cheap so people can afford to feed their pets,” she said.



Despite her advanced age, the woman continues to care for the animals every day. The British woman leaves the shelter only once every few weeks, either to go shopping or to take part in darts matches. “Sometimes I was exhausted - it’s hard work. But then I’d get a little nose rubbed against me or a face that looked at me and I’d remember why I do this. My animals come first and always will,” the pensioner concluded.
