General Motors in the US is experiencing serious problems with 6.2-liter V8 engines that were installed in several GMC, Chevrolet and Cadillac models between March 2021 and the end of May 2024. The recall campaign already affects 597,630 vehicles, but the NHTSA investigation covers almost 900,000 vehicles. This means that the number of SUVs and pickups that will be sent for service may increase. 
The reason for the recall is said to be a potential defect in some components. In particular, there are questions about crankshafts and connecting rods manufactured by American Axle & Manufacturing and Questum Macimex. There are already 28,000 customer complaints known, including 14.3 thousand cases of engine failure. It is specified that 12 malfunctions potentially led to accidents with casualties, and another 42, presumably, ended in fires. 
The list of recalled vehicles includes the Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban and Tahoe, as well as the GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon and Yukon XL. All of them relate to model years from 2021 to 2024.
GM assures that real defects will affect no more than 3% of the cars affected by the service campaign. However, all SUVs and pickups will be inspected. If any faults are detected, dealers are required to replace the entire engine. Free units are also available for owners who have already encountered problems. The remaining cars will be switched to thicker oil, the oil filler cap will be replaced with a new one with a different viscosity index, and the corrected information will be pasted into the manual.
